Tokens per kWh calculator
Tokens per kWh is the number of tokens a server produces for each kilowatt-hour it uses: tokens per second × 3,600 ÷ power in kW. Add the facility overhead factor to include cooling and power losses, and a tariff to get the energy cost of a million tokens.

Use the server's measured power if you have it. The overhead factor adds the facility's share (cooling, UPS losses); 1.0 means the server alone.

Formula: tokens per kWh = tokens/s × 3,600 ÷ (power in kW × overhead factor). Example: 20,000 tokens/s at 6 kW and factor 1.0 = 12,000,000 tokens per kWh.
In DC Sim the Token layer shows this per server and per rack, and every failure scenario reports the tokens it would cost. Read the guide: tokens per kWh, the one metric for an AI room.
How do I convert joules per token to tokens per kWh?
One kWh is 3.6 million joules, so tokens per kWh = 3,600,000 ÷ joules per token. At 0.5 J per token that is 7.2 million tokens per kWh.
Which power should I use?
Say which boundary you measured: the GPU alone, the whole server, or the server plus its share of the facility. The same server can differ several times over between the GPU-only and the facility boundary, so compare like with like.
What is the overhead factor?
The facility's power usage effectiveness (PUE): total facility energy divided by IT energy. 1.0 means the server alone; 1.4 adds 40 % for cooling, UPS losses and the rest of the building.
